Children with sickle cell anemia are at a high risk of stroke. As such, annual transcranial Doppler (TCD) screening is strongly recommended to identify children that should begin stroke prevention efforts.

Children with severe heart or lung failure can be supported by extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), a technology first developed at the University of Michigan.  Children sick enough to require this support are at risk of brain injuries, including strokes and seizures.
